From BMA Training to a Career at Sea: Kennedy Lives His Cruise Ship Dream

For Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) STCW Basic Safety Training alumnus Kennedy, a dream of working at sea has become a reality.

His journey began in 2023 when he enrolled in the six-day STCW Basic Safety Training course at BMA after learning about opportunities in the maritime industry during a public forum in Bamburi,Mombasa County.

“I had always wished to work at sea, but I lacked basic information. During the public forum, I learned about opportunities for seafarers and decided to pursue my dream,” he says.

After completing his training, Kennedy participated in mentorship sessions with experienced seafarers. The guidance and connections he gained helped him understand the industry and prepare for his first opportunity at sea.

“The moment I got my Seaman’s Book, I knew I was already fulfilling my dream. I listened to those working at sea, followed their advice, and things worked out for me,” he says.

His breakthrough came when he secured his first contract as a housekeeper with Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). Today, he is building his career while travelling to destinations he once only imagined visiting.

He encourages young people interested in maritime careers to pursue the right training and obtain the required certification to position themselves for opportunities in the global maritime industry.

“Sea jobs are there, but you must have the right documents. I got my papers ready, secured a job, and I hope to progress to an even bigger position on the ship,” he says.

For Kennedy, working aboard a cruise ship is not only a career but also an opportunity to explore the world.

“I have been to several countries I never imagined I would ever visit. The cruise ships have taken me to those places, making my job even more adventurous,” he says.

His story highlights how quality maritime training, mentorship and determination can transform a dream into an international career at sea.
