For Ann Gitari, distance was never going to stand in the way of her dreams.
Having pursued a Diploma in Hospitality Management with a specialization in Restaurant Service, Ann has always envisioned a career aboard a cruise ship.
When she learned that the STCW Basic Safety Training certificate is a mandatory requirement for anyone seeking employment at sea, she made the bold decision to travel from Nairobi to Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) in Mombasa to obtain the internationally recognized certification.
“I pursued a Diploma in Hospitality Management, specializing in Restaurant Service, and I am currently undertaking the STCW Basic Safety Training course at Bandari Maritime Academy to qualify for cruise ship opportunities. STCW is a mandatory requirement for working on board,” says Ann.
Her journey reflects determination, resilience, and a commitment to achieving her career goals. By investing in internationally recognized maritime safety training, Ann is positioning herself for opportunities in the global cruise industry while inspiring other young people to explore careers in the maritime sector.
She encourages fellow youth to take advantage of the opportunities available in the maritime industry.
“The maritime sector offers many opportunities, but they are only accessible to those with the right qualifications. Step out of your comfort zone, earn the necessary certifications, and prepare yourself for the opportunities ahead. The future is bright.”Ann said.
At Bandari Maritime Academy, youths from across Kenya and the East African region continue to pursue world-class maritime training that equips them with the knowledge, practical skills, and internationally recognized certifications needed to thrive in the global maritime industry.
Ann’s story demonstrates that determination, the right training, and the courage to pursue one’s ambitions can open doors to rewarding careers at sea.
