Bandari Maritime Academy launches students’ guidance and counselling club to mental well-being

By John Ndegwa / BMA

Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) has officially launched the Students’ Guidance and Counselling Club, a significant initiative aimed at enhancing the welfare and holistic development of students and cadets within the Academy.

Speaking during the launch, BMA Counselling Psychologist, Julius Nudi, underscored the importance of creating safe spaces where students can openly address personal, academic and social challenges.

He noted that structured counselling programs play a critical role in nurturing resilience, emotional intelligence and overall well-being among learners in the demanding maritime training environment.

The club’s founder, Gloria Mwambire, a Maritime Transport and Logistics student, highlighted that the initiative will go a long way in addressing mental health concerns among students. She emphasized that the platform will encourage peer-to-peer support, open dialogue and early intervention for those facing challenges.

Echoing these sentiments, Office Administrator in the CEO’s office, Selina Igadwa, noted that the formation of the club is both timely and strategic. She pointed out that establishing a peer counselling team within the student body will complement professional counselling services and foster a supportive and inclusive Academy culture.

Nicole Sulu, a Nautical Science student, observed that mental health challenges among students, cadets, and seafarers are on the rise globally, making the launch of the club particularly relevant. She added that the initiative provides an avenue for awareness creation, stress management and personal growth.

The establishment of the Students’ Guidance and Counselling Club aligns with Bandari Maritime Academy’s commitment to not only academic excellence but also the mental and emotional well-being of its learners.
