Determined to secure meaningful employment in the growing blue economy sector, Ceth Akunyo travelled hundreds of kilometres from Homa Bay County to Mombasa to enrol for forklift operator training at Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA), demonstrating that acquiring the right skills can unlock new career opportunities.
Despite Homa Bay hosting several logistics, transport and blue economy-related companies, Akunyo found it difficult to secure employment because he lacked the professional qualifications required by employers.
“I realised there were many opportunities back home, especially in the blue economy sector, but without the right qualifications I could not secure a position,” said Akunyo.
Motivated by the desire to build a better future, he chose Bandari Maritime Academy for its industry-oriented training that combines classroom instruction with extensive practical sessions, equipping trainees with skills that meet the needs of the labour market.
Three weeks into the programme, Akunyo says the hands-on experience has greatly improved his confidence and competence in operating forklifts safely and efficiently.
“I have gained practical skills and I am now confident in operating the machine. I believe this training will increase my chances of getting employed once I complete the course,” he said.
