Bandari Maritime Academy Strengthens Regional Maritime Safety and Governance Capacity at ESAMI

Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) continues to position itself as a leading institution in maritime training and capacity development within the Eastern and Southern Africa region through active engagement in programmes that support maritime safety, leadership, and governance.

The Academy is currently participating in the Maritime Safety Management and Leadership Programme taking place at the Eastern and Southern Africa Management Institute (ESAMI) in Arusha, Tanzania. The programme is facilitated by the Academy’s Senior Principal Trainer I in Nautical Science, Maj. (Rtd) Franklyne Toniok, who represents the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Eric Katana.

The programme is designed to strengthen the understanding and capacity of board members of regional maritime administrations in maritime safety management and governance. It focuses on building strong leadership skills, improving decision-making processes, and enhancing strategic oversight in the management of maritime affairs.

Maritime safety management is a critical component in ensuring that maritime operations are conducted in a safe, secure, and environmentally responsible manner. It requires effective governance systems, well-informed leadership, and continuous professional development of those entrusted with oversight responsibilities in maritime institutions.

Through this programme, participants are exposed to key concepts and best practices that support the development of strong institutional frameworks for maritime safety. The training also provides an opportunity for regional engagement, where participants from different maritime administrations exchange experiences and discuss common challenges affecting maritime safety and regulation.

Such collaboration is essential in addressing the evolving nature of maritime risks and in promoting harmonized approaches to maritime governance across Eastern and Southern Africa. It also contributes directly to the growth of the Blue Economy, which depends heavily on safe and efficient maritime transport systems.
By taking part in this initiative, Bandari Maritime Academy continues to demonstrate its commitment to advancing maritime excellence through knowledge sharing, professional training, and regional cooperation. The Academy remains focused on supporting the development of competent maritime professionals and strengthening institutions responsible for maritime safety and governance.

Overall, the engagement at ESAMI reflects BMA’s broader mandate of contributing to a safer and more sustainable maritime sector that supports economic growth and regional integration.
