BMA En Route to Shape Future Seafarers Through STCW Training

Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) is steadily shaping the next generation of seafarers through its internationally recognized Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) programme, with 17 trainees currently undertaking the course at the Academy.

The group, drawn from different parts of the country, is expected to complete the training on Sunday, June 21, 2026, having undergone intensive practical sessions designed to prepare them for careers in the global maritime industry.

The STCW course is a mandatory requirement for individuals seeking employment onboard ships and provides essential competencies in maritime safety and emergency response. During the training, participants acquire skills in personal survival techniques, fire prevention and firefighting, elementary first aid, and personal safety and social responsibilities.

Through hands-on exercises and realistic emergency simulations, the trainees have gained valuable experience and confidence in handling situations they may encounter at sea. The practical nature of the programme ensures that participants meet internationally accepted standards required by the maritime industry.

The latest cohort highlights the growing number of young Kenyans pursuing opportunities in the maritime sector and demonstrates BMA’s commitment to developing a competent and globally competitive seafaring workforce.

As they approach the final stages of the programme, the trainees have lauded the Academy for its practical-based training, modern facilities and supportive learning environment, which have enhanced their preparedness for life at sea.

Bandari Maritime Academy remains committed to equipping aspiring seafarers with world-class maritime skills and certifications, creating pathways to employment while supporting the advancement of Kenya’s Blue Economy.
