Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) is participating in a high-level stakeholders’ conference in Kilifi focused on strengthening Kenya’s Maritime Education and Training (MET) framework and advancing the development of a modern Maritime Transport Logistics (MTL) curriculum aligned to industry needs.
The Academy is represented by its Senior Deputy Director, Maritime Transport Operations Training, Mr. Enock Okwema, who is engaging with key sector players in shaping the future of maritime training and logistics competency standards in the country.
The conference brings together a wide range of critical stakeholders in the maritime, transport, and education sectors, including the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA), Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA), Kenya Coast National Polytechnic (KCNP), Railway Training Institute (RTI), Mount Kenya University (MKU), and Kenya Methodist University (KMU).
At the center of the engagement is the collaborative development of occupational standards for Maritime Transport Logistics professionals. The stakeholders are working together to transition the MTL curriculum into a Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) model. This approach is designed to ensure that training outcomes are closely aligned with industry demands, global maritime standards, and emerging trends in logistics and transport operations.
A key focus of the conference is establishing a robust legal and institutional framework for Land-Based Maritime Education and Training (MET). This framework is expected to enhance coordination between training institutions, regulatory bodies, and industry players, ensuring consistency in quality and relevance across maritime training programmes.
Once implemented, these reforms are expected to significantly strengthen Kenya’s maritime human resource capacity, improve the employability of graduates, and position the country as a competitive hub in the Blue Economy through a skilled, competent, and industry-ready workforce.
The initiative reflects a shared national commitment to transforming maritime education, promoting innovation in training delivery, and supporting sustainable growth in maritime transport and logistics sectors.
