Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) has reached a major milestone in its journey to becoming a leading maritime training institution, following its official accreditation as an Approved Teaching Centre and Approved Examination Centre by the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS).
The approval marks a significant achievement for the Academy and reinforces its growing reputation in maritime education and training both locally and internationally. This recognition now positions BMA among a select group of institutions globally authorized to offer ICS programmes and administer their examinations.

The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers is a globally respected professional body dedicated to setting and maintaining the highest standards in the commercial shipping industry. Its qualifications are internationally recognized and provide learners with in-depth knowledge and practical skills required to excel in maritime business, shipping operations, and logistics.
Bandari Maritime Academy CEO Dr. Eric Katana said the Academy will now offer a wide range of ICS qualifications designed to cater to different levels of professional development. At the entry level, students can enroll in Foundation Diplomas such as Liner Trades and Port Agency, which are ideal for individuals seeking to build a solid understanding of the shipping industry.
For those with prior industry exposure, the Academy will offer Advanced Diplomas in areas such as Logistics and Multi-modal Transport, Port & Terminal Management and Liner Trades. These programmes are structured to deepen professional competence and act as a bridge towards full professional qualification.

At the highest level, learners will have the opportunity to undertake the Professional Qualifying Examinations (PQE), which represent the pinnacle of ICS certification. The PQE programme comprises seven examinations covering core areas such as shipping business, maritime law and international trade, equipping candidates with comprehensive expertise in the global shipping industry.
This development is a major boost not only for the Academy but also for Kenya’s maritime sector and the broader Blue Economy. By offering globally benchmarked programmes, BMA is set to produce highly skilled professionals capable of competing in international maritime markets and contributing to the growth of the shipping and logistics industries.
Senior Deputy Director, Maritime Transport and Port Operations training, Enock Okemwa emphasized that the accreditation aligns with its strategic vision of providing World-Class Maritime education and training. It also underscores BMA’s commitment to strengthening industry linkages, enhancing the quality of training, and expanding opportunities for students to access internationally recognized qualifications.

The approval further enables the Academy to directly manage ICS examinations, ensuring that students can complete their studies and certification within a locally accessible and professionally equipped environment. This is expected to reduce barriers to professional advancement for many aspiring maritime professionals in Kenya and the East African region.
As the maritime industry continues to evolve with increasing demand for skilled manpower, Bandari Maritime Academy’s recognition as an ICS Approved Centre places it at the forefront of capacity building in the sector. The Academy is now better positioned to nurture talent, support lifelong learning, and contribute to the sustainable development of the Blue Economy.
