Bandari Maritime Academy joins mangrove restoration drive in Kwale County

Bandari Maritime Academy Chairman of the Board of Directors Eng. Lung’anzi Mangale, accompanied by Members of the Board of Directors; Dr. Fridah Simba and Joab Tumbo and BMA CEO Dr. Eric Katana, joined Principal Secretary, State Department for Mining, Harry Kimtai, at Mwache Mangrove creek in Kwale County for a mangrove tree planting exercise.

Representing the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, Ali Hassan Joho, PS Kimtai led the initiative and emphasized the importance of environmental conservation.

Principal Secretary Kimtai noted that the national target of planting 15 billion trees, as championed by President William Ruto, is achievable through collaborative efforts. He highlighted the vital role of mangrove ecosystems in protecting coastlines from erosion, supporting marine biodiversity and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

Chairman Eng. Lung’anzi Mangale lauded the initiative, reaffirming Bandari Maritime Academy’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the Blue Economy. He noted that such engagements provide an opportunity for cadets to gain practical insights into marine conservation and sustainable resource management.

BMA CEO Dr. Eric Katana emphasized the Academy’s dedication to producing environmentally conscious maritime professionals. He highlighted that participation in conservation activities not only enriches the cadets’ learning experience but also aligns with the Academy’s broader role in supporting national development and environmental protection.

The exercise brought together government officials, members of the Mwache community, BMA management, staff and cadets in a collective effort to restore and conserve the fragile coastal ecosystem.
