Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA), in partnership with the University of Nairobi, today hosted a Leadership and Mentorship Forum aimed at nurturing values-driven, competent, and future-ready leaders among students.

The forum brought together key leaders, mentors, and professionals, and was graced by Member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) and renowned businessman Hon. Suleiman Shahbal, who was welcomed at the Academy by Director of the Board Dr. Fridah Simba, alongside BMA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Eric Katana.

Speaking during the forum, Dr. Simba underscored the importance of competency-based training, noting that hands-on learning equips students with practical skills that respond to real industry needs. She challenged students to go beyond theory and develop market-driven solutions that address contemporary socio-economic and industrial challenges.

On his part, Hon. Suleiman Shahbal emphasized the power of networking, encouraging students to intentionally build meaningful professional relationships as a foundation for growth, opportunity, and influence in their careers and leadership journeys.

In his speech, Dr. Katana highlighted the transformative role of mentorship in leadership development, describing it as a vital link between aspiration and success.

“Mentorship is the bridge between ambition and achievement. None of us stands alone. Each of us is a product of guidance, correction, and encouragement from those who walked the path before us. I urge you, our student leaders, to seek mentors, to learn humbly, and in turn, to mentor others. Leadership multiplies when it is shared,” said Dr. Katana.

Swahili Pot Hub Founder and CEO Mahmoud Noor emphasized that ideas alone are not enough without deliberate action. He challenged students to focus on implementation, noting that true impact is realized when innovative ideas are translated into practical, scalable solutions.

“Ideas are powerful, but implementation is what creates change. The difference between success and failure lies in the ability to execute, remain consistent, and adapt along the way,” said Noor.

Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Mombasa Branch Chairperson, Natasha Ali, stressed the significance of integrity and accountability in leadership, urging students to lead by example and positively influence those around them through ethical conduct and responsible decision-making.
