For Zuena Mwende from Mvita in Mombasa County, receiving her Seafarer’s Discharge Book marked more than just the completion of a training journey—it brought her one step closer to her dream of working at sea.
A certificate holder in Hospitality Management, Mwende had long aspired to work aboard cruise ships but lacked the specialized maritime training required to begin her journey as a seafarer. Her opportunity came through sponsorship from the Mvita National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF), which enabled her to undertake the STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) course at Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA).

For Mwende, enrolling at BMA was the beginning of a new chapter.
“The moment I stepped at Bandari Maritime Academy, I knew my future had changed. Working at sea had been my long-time dream. Now I have my Seafarer’s Discharge Book ready to explore the sea.’’ she said.
The STCW Basic Safety Training course equips trainees with essential knowledge and practical skills in areas such as personal survival techniques, fire prevention and firefighting, elementary first aid, and personal safety and social responsibility; key competencies for anyone seeking to work aboard ships.
After completing her training and receiving her Seafarer’s Discharge Book, Mwende is now preparing to pursue employment opportunities in the maritime industry. She is also benefiting from mentorship by experienced seafarers, gaining valuable insights into job searching, interviews, and professional conduct at sea.
“This is not a passport like the usual passport. It carries the destiny of my generation,” Mwende said.
Her story demonstrates how maritime training can open new career pathways for young people from diverse academic and professional backgrounds. With her hospitality background and newly acquired maritime skills, Mwende is now ready to explore opportunities in the cruise ship industry.
