Students and cadets at Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) are actively participating in the Bandari Maritime Academy Students’ Association (BMASA) leadership elections currently underway at the Academy.
The exercise marks a significant moment in the Academy’s student governance calendar, providing an opportunity for learners to democratically elect their representatives and strengthen student leadership, participation and accountability within the institution.
Bandari Maritime Academy Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Eric Katana, underscored the importance of student leadership in nurturing discipline, responsibility and teamwork among trainees, noting that such democratic processes play a vital role in shaping future maritime professionals.
The elections are being overseen by the BMA Election Coordination Committee, chaired by Enock Okemwa, in collaboration with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). IEBC Mvita Constituency Senior Election Officer Masha Sudi is supervising the exercise to ensure transparency, credibility and adherence to electoral standards.
A total of six candidates are contesting for various leadership positions in this year’s BMASA elections. Nayyif Najim and Brian Otieno are competing for the position of Chairperson, while Fred Kahedu and Ramadhan Mohammed are vying for the Treasurer’s position. Stella Sau and Charo Shadrack are contesting for the Sports and Entertainment Representative role.
The peaceful and orderly conduct of the elections reflects the Academy’s commitment to promoting good governance, leadership development and active student engagement.
The results are expected to usher in a new team of student leaders who will represent the interests of the student body and contribute to the continued growth and vibrancy of campus life at Bandari Maritime Academy. The voting exercise closes today at 3:00pm.
