Standing confidently behind the controls of a forklift, Atieno is proving that maritime careers have no gender.
As the only female trainee in a class of 30 forklift trainees at Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA), Atieno is embracing the challenge with determination while inspiring more women to venture into maritime training.
She says women are equally capable of excelling in maritime fields and encourages young women across the country to take advantage of skills-based training opportunities.
“We can do this just like men. We can operate these machines and even exceed employers’ expectations,” said Isabel.
Motivated by the Government’s call for young people to acquire practical skills to tackle unemployment, Atieno believes she is taking the right path towards building a successful career.
She notes that maritime training not only equips young people with employable skills but also empowers women to compete confidently in industries traditionally dominated by men.
“The sky is the limit. I want every young woman to believe in herself, pursue maritime skills, and never allow gender stereotypes to define her future. If I can do it, they can too,” Atieno added.
Atieno hopes her journey will inspire more women to enroll in maritime courses at Bandari Maritime Academy and other training institutions, demonstrating that the future of the maritime workforce is inclusive and driven by talent, determination and skill.
