Practical-Based Training Transforms Careers of Forklift Trainees at Bandari Maritime Academy

Practical-based training at Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) is already transforming the careers of forklift trainees who commenced their course on June 15, 2026, with many expressing excitement over the skills they have acquired within just one week of intensive instruction.

The trainees, drawn from different parts of the country, say the hands-on approach to learning has exceeded their expectations and given them the confidence to operate forklifts safely and professionally.

After only one week of training, the learners are already capable of starting forklift engines, driving forward and in reverse, maneuvering sideways, and lifting and handling loads using forklift forks.

Among the trainees is Leonard Muye from Kilifi County, who believes the course will open doors to employment opportunities in the logistics, transport, and maritime sectors across the Coast region.

He noted that the skills gained will enable him to seek opportunities at the Port of Mombasa, Lamu Port, Shimoni Port, mining sites in Taita Taveta, and salt harvesting companies in Ngomeni.

“By undertaking forklift training, I am confident of securing employment opportunities in the blue economy sector, especially in warehouses and logistics facilities where forklift operators are essential for daily operations,” said Muye.

Fatuma Ibrahim from Mishomoroni in Mombasa said the training is helping her pursue her dream of becoming a successful working woman while demonstrating that women can excel in technical and operational careers.

“I carry the dream of proving that women are capable of achieving their ambitions. I therefore encourage young women across the country to enroll in maritime and technical courses at Bandari Maritime Academy and build rewarding careers,” she said.

The forklift operations course is one of the industry-driven short programmes offered by Bandari Maritime Academy to equip young people with practical skills demanded by employers in logistics, warehousing, transport, maritime, and other blue economy sectors.

Through its emphasis on practical training and competency-based learning, Bandari Maritime Academy continues to empower youth with job-ready skills and contribute to the development of Kenya’s maritime and logistics workforce.
