Marine Engineering Cadets Visit Kenya Shipyards Limited for Practical Training

Marine Engineering cadets from Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) visited Kenya Shipyards Limited (KSL) in Mombasa for practical training to strengthen their understanding of shipyard operations and marine engineering practices.

During the visit, the cadets gained first-hand exposure to key shipyard activities, including surface preparation, vessel painting, and dry-docking procedures.

The Level 5 and 6 cadets also explored various propulsion systems fitted on different vessels, ranging from motorboats to commercial passenger ferries undergoing maintenance at the facility.

The visit allowed the cadets to connect theoretical concepts learnt in class to practical applications in an operational shipyard environment. Through direct observation, they gained insights into hull maintenance, corrosion control, vessel preservation, and the operation of marine machinery.

Additionally, the exposure familiarized the cadets with industrial safety procedures, specialized equipment, and environmental standards that guide operations in shipyard facilities.

Such industry-based learning experiences complement classroom instruction by equipping cadets with practical knowledge, technical skills, and workplace awareness essential for their future careers in the maritime industry, both at sea and ashore.
