After gaining valuable experience as a Galley Utility and later as an Ordinary Seaman aboard an American cruise ship, Bandari Maritime Academy alumnus Abdihafidh has returned to the Academy for his STCW Basic Safety Training validation as he prepares to rejoin the cruise industry—this time as an entertainer.
His journey reflects the diverse career opportunities available in the global maritime industry and demonstrates how continuous training can open new career pathways for Kenyan seafarers.
According to Abdihafidh, STCW Basic Safety Training is a mandatory requirement for anyone seeking employment at sea, regardless of their professional background.
“STCW Basic Safety Training is mandatory for those aspiring to work at sea. If you are a nurse and you want to work on a ship, go out and get your STCW,” he said.
He noted that cruise ships operate much like floating cities and require professionals from a wide range of disciplines, including accountants, DJs, entertainers, medical officers, hospitality staff, and many others. This creates significant employment opportunities for Kenyan youth with the right qualifications.
Reflecting on his career progression, Abdihafidh said: “I started as a Galley Utility, progressed to Ordinary Seaman, and now, once I complete my STCW validation, I will be returning to work as an entertainer.”
A Galley Utility plays a vital support role aboard a ship by maintaining cleanliness, sanitation, and organization in the galley while assisting the culinary team to ensure efficient food service operations.
