Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) cadets participated in the commemoration of the International Day for Women in Maritime, held at Hotel Sapphire, Mombasa. The event brought together key stakeholders from the maritime sector to celebrate and promote gender diversity in the industry.
The event was graced by esteemed guests, including Captain Dave Muli, Regional Coordinator, International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Ambassador Hellen Gichuhi, MBS, Secretary for Diaspora Welfare and Partnerships at the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Republic of Kenya.
The celebration served as a powerful platform to recognize the achievements of women in the Maritime sector and to reinforce the call for more inclusive participation, particularly among youth and aspiring female seafarers.
Captain Muli emphasized the IMO’s continued commitment to championing gender equality in the Maritime industry and encouraged institutions like BMA to sustain initiatives that support women’s professional growth at sea and ashore.
Ambassador Gichui echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of diaspora engagement in unlocking global Maritime opportunities for Kenyan women.
BMA cadets, many of whom are wome,n actively participated in the discussions, networking sessions and knowledge-sharing forums.
Their presence not only showcased the Academy’s commitment to inclusivity in Maritime education and training but also symbolized the growing representation of young Kenyan women in a traditionally male-dominated sector.
