Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) cadets who participated in the 11th Our Ocean Conference held at PrideInn Paradise Beach Resort in Mombasa have described the experience as transformative, saying it broadened their understanding of the vast opportunities available in the maritime and blue economy sectors.
The cadets have commended the Academy’s leadership, led by Chief Executive Officer Dr. Eric Katana, for providing them with a rare opportunity to engage with global maritime experts, researchers, investors, policymakers and industry leaders from across the world.
Speaking on behalf of the students, Nautical Science cadet Kaberia Mbugua said the conference exposed them to new perspectives on the blue economy and inspired them to pursue excellence in their maritime careers.
“The conference was a dream changer for all of us at BMA. We interacted and connected with people and organizations we never imagined meeting. It opened our eyes to the endless opportunities available in the maritime industry,” said Mbugua.
He noted that interacting with key players in the sector boosted the cadets’ morale and strengthened their determination to work hard and acquire the skills needed to compete in the global maritime industry.
Beyond networking and creating lasting professional connections, the cadets actively participated in youth leadership summits, where they shared their views on policies and operational frameworks aimed at increasing youth participation and benefits in Kenya’s blue economy.
The cadets noted that the exposure enhanced their confidence, expanded their professional networks and provided valuable insights into the future of the maritime sector, reinforcing their commitment to becoming leaders and innovators in the industry.
Their participation in the conference reflects BMA’s commitment to providing practical exposure and global engagement opportunities that prepare cadets for successful careers in the maritime and blue economy sectors.
