Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CMA CGM Shipping and Logistics Company to facilitate placement opportunities for its cadets and strengthen the link between maritime training and industry employment.
The agreement was signed by BMA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Eric Katana and CMA CGM Kenyan Cluster Managing Director Benjamin Coston in the presence of the Ambassador of France to Kenya, H.E. Wadid Benaabou.

CMA CGM is a global shipping and logistics group headquartered in France, with operations spanning international maritime transport, port services and integrated logistics.
The company operates a fleet of more than 700 vessels, ranging from feeder ships serving regional ports to large container vessels transporting goods across major international shipping routes.
The partnership is expected to provide BMA cadets with valuable practical experience, enhance their professional development and prepare them to compete in the increasingly competitive global maritime industry.
Speaking during the engagement, Dr. Katana commended the French Government and its partners for their continued support, noting that these collaborations have significantly strengthened the Academy’s capacity to deliver quality maritime training.
He observed that industry partnerships enable cadets to gain hands-on experience and understand industry standards and operational requirements, which are essential as they transition into employment.
“This collaboration represents an important link between skills development and the practical demands of the maritime industry. By facilitating placement opportunities for our cadets, CMA CGM contributes to their professional growth and practical competence,” said Dr. Katana.

The CEO further acknowledged the contribution of the French administration and its affiliated organisations in supporting the Academy’s mandate to develop skilled human capital for Kenya’s Blue Economy.
He also highlighted the MoU between BMA and Alliance Française, which provides for French language training for cadets.
He noted that proficiency in French could broaden their employment prospects and enhance their competitiveness in the international maritime labour market.
Meanwhile, H.E. Wadid Benaabou reaffirmed France’s support for the Academy’s efforts to develop skilled maritime professionals and strengthen Kenya’s Blue Economy.
He encouraged the cadets to learn French, noting that proficiency in the language could open up opportunities in international maritime markets where French is widely used and, in some roles, required.
Present were BMA Senior Deputy Director for Corporate Services CPA Evans Ayieyo, Deputy Director Registrar Dr.Irene Mugo, Ag. Senior Deputy Director Maritime Transport Operations Training, Mr. Enock Okemwa and Members of the Students Council.
