Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA), under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Dr. Eric Katana, has continued to champion environmental sustainability by participating in a tree planting exercise at Dongo Kundu Mteza Creek.

The initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Kenya Forest Service and the Cardinal Youth Association of Kenya, brought together stakeholders committed to restoring Coastal ecosystems and mitigating the effects of climate change.

Dr. Katana noted that the exercise aligns with the Academy’s broader vision of integrating environmental conservation into Maritime and Blue Economy training.

“Protecting our Marine and Coastal ecosystems goes hand in hand with developing a sustainable Blue Economy. By involving students, staff and partners in such initiatives, we are instilling values of environmental stewardship that are critical for the future of our nation,” Dr. Katana said.

The exercise also emphasized the importance of mangrove restoration at Mteza Creek, a critical habitat for Marine biodiversity, fisheries and shoreline protection.

Officials from the Kenya Forest Service lauded the Academy’s involvement, stressing that public-private partnerships are key to achieving the national tree growing target of 15 billion trees by 2032.

Youth from the Cardinal Youth Association actively participated in the planting, underscoring the role of young people in climate action and sustainable development.

The Academy pledged to continue engaging in environmental conservation programs as part of its mandate to promote sustainable practices within the Maritime and Blue Economy sectors.
