Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) has called on youths from the Coast region to acquire port operations and equipment skills to position themselves for employment opportunities expected to emerge from the Dangote Oil Refinery investment in Lamu.
Speaking during the Innovation and Business Summit 2026 at Tana River Vocational Training Centre in Hola, Tana River County, BMA Ag. Deputy Director, Maritime Transport and Operations Training, Mr. Enock Okwema, urged youths to enroll in the Academy’s Port Operations Equipment courses.

Mr. Okwema said the refinery is expected to create demand for skilled personnel, particularly in port operations and equipment handling.
“The industry will need port equipment operators, and Bandari Maritime Academy is well equipped to provide the necessary training,” Mr. Okwema said.
He also called on county governments across the region to establish sponsorship programmes to enable more youths, especially those from needy backgrounds, to access technical training and prepare for emerging employment opportunities.
“Bandari Maritime Academy is open to working with county governments to ensure that needy students are supported to access training,” he said.
Mr. Okwema further encouraged youths to undertake the STCW Basic Safety Training course, which provides essential maritime safety competencies and opens opportunities to pursue careers aboard various types of vessels, including cruise ships.

BMA currently offers several Port Operations Equipment courses, including Forklift Operation, Gantry Cargo Crane Simulator, and Terminal Tractor Driving, which are essential in the Dangote Oil Refinery investment.
The Academy is using the Innovation and Business Summit 2026 to sensitize young people on maritime training, career opportunities, and the potential of the Blue Economy to create employment and support economic growth in the Coast region.
