“Don’t choose a specific job if you want to join cruise ships. Take the job that is available first, then later you can transition into your preferred career position.”
This was the key message delivered to Bandari Maritime Academy’s Basic Safety Training (BST) trainees during a career mentorship session conducted by the Junior Seafarers Association after the successful completion of their one-week training.
The mentors encouraged the aspiring seafarers to remain flexible and focus on gaining their first sea-going experience, noting that entering the maritime industry through any available opportunity can open doors to more specialized roles in the future.The STCW Basic Safety Training course equips aspiring seafarers with the fundamental knowledge and practical skills required to work safely at sea in accordance with international maritime standards.
During the training, the trainees gained competencies in personal survival techniques, fire prevention and firefighting, elementary first aid, and personal safety and social responsibilities.
These competencies prepare them to respond effectively to emergencies and maintain a safe working environment on board vessels.
To complement the technical training, the Junior Seafarers Association conducted a career mentorship session focusing on career readiness.The trainees received guidance on identifying credible job search platforms, preparing for job interviews, and developing professional curricula vitae (CVs) to enhance their competitiveness in the maritime labour market.
The mentorship also introduced the trainees to a network of experienced seafarers who will provide ongoing guidance, professional support, and industry insights as they begin their maritime careers.
The initiative reflects Bandari Maritime Academy’s commitment to producing competent, safety-conscious, and career-ready seafarers by combining internationally recognized maritime training with mentorship and professional networking opportunities.
